2009 Emerging Dynasty Football Prospects - Part 3
Chad Henne would probably have benefited from backing up Chad Pennington for the remainder of the 2009 season. A not-so-surprising season ending injury to Chad Pennington however has thrust Henne into a starting role a little earlier than the Dolphins were planning on. Fortunately Henne has some experience as a starter. Why we want Henne on our Dynasty Roster: For Henne's limited NFL experience, he has plenty of collegiate experiece, a major indicator of professional success. He started as a true freshman at Michigan, quarterbacking the Wolverines to 4 consecutive bowl games. His impressive number of collegiate starts and his cannon for an arm was enough to impress Bill Parcells. His opportunity to learn behind Chad Pennington has prepared him to step in as an NFL starter. Henne may have found the field earlier than the Dolphins wanted, but he is ready should be ready to go. As of Week 5 of the 2009 season Henne has 2 career starts.
What to Expect: Henne will experience some growing pains, no doubt, but expect flashes of beastliness. His combination of raw talent, collegiate experience and time spent learning his trade at the professional level (behind seasoned veteran Chad Pennington) is a recipe for success. The Dolphins are a run first team that will heavily utilize the wildcat. This will make things easier for Henne in his first season as a starter. We will see him take more and more shots downfield as the seaon progresses, but expect a conservative approach in 2009. He has an okay stable of receivers, but expect the Dolphins to upgrade the position this offseason. Henne has big upside for 2010 and moving forward.
It's hard not to think of Mighty Mouse when watching Ahmad Bradshaw carry the rock. He runs hard, never goes down on first contact and has breakaway speed.
Why we want Bradshaw on our Dynasty Roster: Bradshaw runs much larger than his small frame, and has established himself as the most explosive runner on the Giants roster. He has finally gotten his chance to get consistent touches in an RB committee and is taking advantage of every carry. So far this season, he is averaging 6.5 yards per carry and has found the end zone twice (both in Week 5). He does need to work on his receiving skills out of the backfield, which would make him even more valuable.
What to expect: Bradshaw was quoted in the preseason that he is finally getting his chance. He certainly has been taking advantage of it so far and is a legitimate RB2 or flex player each week based on matchup. Given the Giants offense and offensive line, Bradshaw is definitely on the rise. At only 23 years old, Bradshaw has plenty of upside in an RB committe for a long time. His size limits his ability to be a feature back.
Pierre Garcon has a skill set that compliments the Colts receiving corps nicely. He received rave reviews for his improving game this summer from Bill Polian and others in the Colts organization. Coming from a small Division III school, Mount Union, Garcon has adapted quickly to the NFL game.
Why we want Garcon on our Dynasty Roster: Garcon is not particularly tall at 6-feet, but the combination of 210 lbs, impressive speed, and a physical style of play, he plays much larger than his frame suggests. Garcon got his chance to step in and make an impact as soon as Anthony Gonzalez went down with an injury in Week 1. Garcon has taken advantage of his chances by hauling in 11 receptions and 2 TD's in his first 5 games in a starting role. While Gonzalez will soon be returning from injury, it is becoming more clear that Garcon's talent is untapped. Of the Colts receivers, Garcon's skill set fills the flanker position better than any other on the roster.
What to expect: Garcon is becoming the clear #2 WR on the Colts roster. Gonzalez will likely return to the slot and battle with Austin Collie for passes in the shallow crossing zone. Garcon lining up opposite Reggie Wayne will allow him to see plenty of single coverage and remain a deep threat, one that Peyton Manning has enjoyed having at his disposal. There are plenty of receiving options in Indy, so in 2009 he may be limited to a 3-4 catch per game player. The only short term downside here is if the Colts decide Gonzalez, upon return from injury is better at the flanker position, leaving Austin Collie to dominate the slot.
Pierre Garcon is not the only young wideout emerging in Indianapolis. Rookie Austin Collie has taken advantage of his opportunity to fill the slot role in Indy and gives Peyton Manning yet another weapon in his arsenal. He broke out in Week 5 with 8 receptions for 97 yards and 2 TD's.
Why we want Collie on our Dynasty Roster: Through 5 weeks of the 2009 season, Collie has managed to catch 20 balls and find the end zone 3 times. Not bad for a sleeper out of BYU. Peyton Manning makes his receivers better and Collie is going to be a direct beneficiary. Expect 2009 to be filled with up and down performances because there are so many other options ahead of him. More importantly, though, is that Collie is learning on the job and earning Peyton's trust. This will pay dividends in the long term, especially in the high-powered Colts offense.
What to expect: 3rd year pro Anthony Gonzalez is scheduled to return from injury in the coming weeks, which will create an interesting situation at the wide receiver position in Indy. Gonzalez' tenure will position himself back into a starting role and whether he moves back to the slot or replaces Garcon at the flanker position has yet to be seen. Nonetheless, Collie will continue to get reps and grow under the watchful eye of Peyton Manning.
Johnny Knox is one of the most explosive players in the NFL. As a rookie out of small school Abilene Christian, Knox was a solid prospect with great speed. Size was thought to be a detractor, but his speed, hands and upside made him an attractive rookie selection in Dynasty leagues. He was not expected to make an impact his quickly, however.
Why we want Knox on our Dynasty Roster: Of the receivers on the Bears roster, Knox is by far the most talented prospect. His rookie season will be filled with plenty of competition from Devin Hester, Earl Bennett and Greg Olsen, but it is only a matter of time before Jay Culter realizes just how special Knox is - if he hasn't already. He has 14 receptions through 4 games (Week 5 bye) and has found the end zone twice. He has also posted back-to-back kick return game totals of 134 and 147 yards and 1 TD. Knox is a natural playmaker.
What to expect: This is a situation to be patient with. Jay Cutler makes his receivers better , no question. It will be time though before this team establishes themselves and their identity with a new QB in town. In the meantime, 6 reception games will be followed by 1 reception games for the rookie. This will all eventually change as Cutler helps Knox be the 2009 version of Eddie Royal.
Andre Caldwell has caught the eye of Carson Palmer. His game winning TD grab in Week 5 caught the eye of the Bengals fans as well. Coming out of Florida a few seasons ago, Caldwell was known to have solid hands, speed and a willingness to get better at the next level.
Why we want Caldwell on our Dynasty Roster: In just his 2nd season, he has already become one of the go-to targets for Carson Palmer. On an impressive roster full of talented receivers Caldwell has already logged 18 receptions and 2 TD's in 2009. Chris Henry may possess more upside, but also comes with more baggage and has not lived up to expectations thus far. That makes Caldwell the young Bengal we want to own for the long term.
What to Expect: If he keeps developing, Caldwell could easily establish himself as the Bengals #1 WR option heading into 2010. Palmer is finally 2 years removed from his ACL injury and is starting to show signs of the Top-10 talent he was prior to the injury. Chad Ochocinco is not getting younger but he is playing like a true WR1 again. The aforementioned Henry has not produced as expected and Laveraneus Coles is an aging veteran that is no long term threat. Caldwell will need to be patient, but he can carve himself a significant role.
