| Needs Not Wants |
While each team moves in a direction toward domination or squander, the fantasy values of the teams players can be directly affected as well. The discerning dynasty owner monitors these patterns with the hope of finding fantasy success from year to year. Below, we'll take a team by team look at the dynasty situations impacted by all of the fresh rookie talent.
![]() |
Buffalo Bills |
Trent Edwards is smiling. Although they lost all pro Tackle Jason Peters in a trade to the Eagles, the Bills added important components to the offense and defense, noteably OT Andy Levitre. We like rookie TE Shawn Nelson as a threat in the middle of field to boost the value of T.O. and Lee Evans working the sidelines. The addition of receiving threats spreads the field for Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson, improving their fantasy value.
![]() |
Miami Dolphins |
Overall an average draft for the Dolphins. The addition of Pat White says we will see more wildcat options this season and he is getting a look as a QB. Henne owners should monitor this situation closely. Patrick Tuner and Brian Hartline are WR's who have some learning to do, but they are both big bodies (Turner in particular) capable of making the middle of the field grabs the Fins have been looking for.
![]() |
New England Patriots |
Bill Belicheck shows off his genius again by trading down multiple times to accumulate numerous late round picks for 2009 and 2010. The only notable offensive player taken by the Pats in 2009 is Brandon Tate from UNC. He's coming off an ACL injury which hurt his stock, however he skill set is in the top 7 WR of this year's class and should prove to be a steal for NE. They also picked up QB Brian Hoyer in FA, who is worth keeping an eye on as a long term prospect. Expect similar fantasy productivity out of the NE Patriots in 2009.
![]() |
New York Jets |
The Jets made a statement in the 2009 draft by moving up twice, and giving up a lot, to select franchise QB Mark Sanchez and RB Shonn Greene. Sanchez's skill set fits well in the conservative, run first Jets offense, while his learning curve also stands to gain from this system. He should be the week 1 starter. Greene is a powerful between the tackles runner that should quickly cut into Thomas Jones's carries.
![]() |
Houston Texans |
A confusing draft in Houston. Most were expecting them to add a power running back to compliment Steve Slaton, however Alex Gibbs likes to develop RB's in his system. They did add two RB's with potential as UDFA, Jeremiah Johnson and Arien Foster. Johnson's skill set is similar to Slaton, while Foster could be the bruiser that Houston was looking for. Offensively, the Texans selected two TE's to line up next to pro bowler Owen Daniels. It will be interesting to see how the Texans utilize James Casey (TE) who is a ridiculous athlete that can play all over the field. Owen's value has taken a bit of a hit. We still really like the fantasy productivity coming out of Houston in 2009.
![]() |
Indianapolis Colts |
The Colts (especially Bill Polian) are smart. His career running back progression includes Marshall Faulk for Edgerrin James, James for Joseph Addai, and someday, Addai for Donald Brown. They also drafted WR Austin Collie, a skilled slot receiver, that makes us think that as Reggie Wayne gets a little older, Anthony Gonzalez could move to the #1, leaving an opening in the slot position. Same old in Indy, expect similar fantasy production in 2009.
![]() |
Jacksonville Jaguars |
There is a compelling fantasy situation brewing in Jacksonville. While they didn't draft any high profile offensive weapons in the '09 draft, they did the next best thing by selecting stud OT's in Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. This move makes David Garrard and MJD very happy as their O-line was among the worst in the league in 2008. We also like the addition of RB Rashad Jennings, who is a big body power back easily capabable of seeing the field early to help spell MJD. They also added two slot receivers in Mike Thomas and Jarrett Dillard, each smallish but capable slot receivers. Not addressing the QB position makes Garrard comfortable and indicates they have plans to resign him in 2010 if he can produce in '09.
![]() |
Tennessee Titans |
A nice Dynasty draft by the Titans. They filled a desperate WR need by taking Kenny Britt in the 1st round. Their 3rd round pick of pass catching TE Jared Cook hurts Bo Scaife's dynasty value in Tenn. At first glance, the addition of rookie RB Javon Ringer is confusing when trying to determine his role in the offense. The discerning fantasy owner realizes that Lendale White is in the final year of his contract, and the Titans are growing more and more comfortable with Chris Johnson's ability to run between the tackles. The lateral quickness of Javon Ringer will be a valuable asset in Tenn.
![]() |
Baltimore Ravens |
Joe Flacco fantasy owners were dreaming of a deep field WR threat, but they got the next best thing - Michael Oher (OT). Pass catching TE Davon Drew is a project, that should eventually take over for Todd Heap and LJ Smith, while RB Cedric Peerman is an interesting versatile prospect to keep an eye on. Until the Ravens find a deep receiving threat for Flacco his upside remains in check. Expect similar fantasy production from all Ravens players in 2009.
![]() |
Cincinnati Bengals |
The Bengals made an impressive move to draft Missouri TE Chase Coffman, this years most experienced pass catching TE. And that's about it. Carson Palmer value increases some with the addition of Coffman who could become the new Romo to Witten, however there are still major voids at the WR position. Last year's WR selections of Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell need to step up. The addition of Andre Smith (OT) should help the running game, but it is unclear who will make up the backfield in 2009. They drafted athletic RB Bernard Scott despite his littered past, however at age 25 his fantasy value is shaky at best.
![]() |
Cleveland Browns |
In typical Eric Mangini fashion, the situation in Cleveland will keep fantasy owners guessing. Leverage is currently the buzz word out of Cleveland in response to the Browns 2009 draft selections. The addition of polished WR Brian Robiskie and WR project Mohammed Massaquoi provide depth for a Bryalon Edwards trade. Drafting RB James Davis is an important handcuff for Jamal Lewis owners. Acquiring Brent Ratliff in a 1st round trade with the Jets provides leverage to move either QB Derek Anderson or QB Brady Quinn this offseason.
![]() |
Pittsburgh Steelers |
The 2008-09 Superbowl Champions spent most of their '09 Draft picks further bolstering their impressive defense. Their single early draft pick WR, Mike Wallace is a speedy player that they hope can fill the role of Nate Washinton who was lost through free agency. The Steelers "way" is to train their rookies for a year or two before allowingt them to see field, so it is safe to presume no immediate impact from Wallace. 5'9", 230 lb. tank Frank Summers could work his way in the Steelers RB plans. Steele City has plenty of offensive talent in place, so suspect similar fantasy producitivy across the offensive and defensive side of the ball in '09.
![]() |
Kansas City Chiefs |
Scott Piolis first draft in KC proved to be an average one. Thier 1st round pick in DE Tyson Jackson was the first surprise of the draft, but should help improve the Defense. We are intrigued by the 7th round picks of Javarris Williams and Jake O'Connell. Williams is a powerful RB/FB that potentially could serve a role opposite Jamaal Charles especially if the Chiefs don't retain Larry Johnson. O'Connell listed at 6'3" 250 lbs is more a TE than a WR. He is extremely athletic, and with Tony Gonzalez now in Atlanta, there is a desperate need to fill the position in KC. We expect there to be a lot of offense on this young and improving team in KC. Matt Cassel has at the very least an adequate weapon at each skill position.
![]() |
Denver Broncos |
Denver Broncos - Josh McDaniels first NFL Draft as a head coach was met with much anticipation. The Broncos had one of the worst Defenses in 2008, however the Broncos decided to further crowd their backfield by taking Knowshon Moreno with their 1st 1st round pick. In the 5th and 6th rounds they added a couple developmental offensive players in WR Kenny McKinley and QB Tom Brandstater. It should be some time before McKinley is fantasy relevant and Brandstater will tagged as the next developmental project of QB guru Josh McDaniels. Moreno's pass catching ability adds another weapon for QB Kyle Orton, but the overall fantasy outlook in Denver is similar to that of before the draft.

Oakland Raiders |
Things never change in Oakland. Al Davis loves speed, and it appears that over the last few seasons, he has assembled the fastest football team on the planet. The Raiders had many scratching their heads when they selected Darrius Heyward-Bey at the #7 spot over high profile Michael Crabtree. They also selected another speedy receiver in Louis Murphy in the 4th round out of Florida. The question marks that surround DHB are similar to many of the picks over the last few years in Oakland. Can he develop his raw skills into studliness? Each offensive position in Oakland is crowded with fast, athletic players that have yet to prove anything in the NFL.
![]() |
San Diego Chargers |
Two offensive player were selected by the Chargers in the '09 draft. RB/FB Gartrell Johnson taken in the 4th round indicates the Chargers are still comfortable in LT2 and Darren Sproles to carry the load in 2009. Demetrius Byrd who was graded as a 3rd/4th round prospect fell to the 7th round following an automobile accident shortly before the draft. Byrd is a long term developmental prospect.
![]() |
New York Giants |
The needs were pretty clear for the Giants heading into the '09 draft. They desperately needed replacement WR's for Amani Toomer and Plaxico Burress and found a clone for each player in posession WR Hakeem Nicks and end zone threat WR Ramses Barden. Each of these receivers have great upside, have the opportunity to step in and contribute immediately, and should help the value of Eli Manning compensating for the occasional errant throw. The Giants were also extremely excited to see RB Andre Brown sitting there in the 4th round. He could fill the role of the departed Derrick Ward and has a body type capable of carrying a larger load than Ahmad Bradshaw should Brandon Jacobs go down to injury. Travis Beckham is an intermediate route receiver (faster in and out of cuts) that will impact Kevin Boss's value, however the Giants are still high on Boss's straight line speed of Boss and his big play potential. There is a lot of depth in NY at each fantasy position, and we expect to see the cream rise begin to rise to the top by mid season 2009.
![]() |
Philadelphia Eagles |
The Eagles are always looking for versatile offensive weaponry to fit the spread offense run by Andy Reid. 1st round pick Jeremy Maclin is a big time playmaker similar to DeSean Jackson. LeSean McCoy is a clone of a youthful Brian Westbrook and should grow to fill the RB1 role in time. They also found a playmaker in TE Cornelius Ingram who, when fully recovers from an ACL injury, will add an athletic big-body to McNabb's arsenal. McNabb value spikes quite a bit with the addition of these playmakers, and the addition of Pro-Bowl OT Jason Peters to their O-Line has McNabb smiling. The Eagles will be one of the most potent offenses in 2009.
![]() |
Washington Redskins |
The Redskins did not draft an offensive player until TE Eddie Williams and WR Marko Mitchell in the 7th round. We don't expect either of these players to contribute offensively and anticipate offensive production similar to 2008. The Skins will expect 2nd year WR Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly to take a big step forward. The Jason Campbell situation went from bad to worse and he will likely walk after this season. The Redskins Defense should be significantly more beastly with the FA addition of Albert Haynesworth and 1st Round selection DE Brian Orakpo.
![]() |
Dallas Cowboys |
Did they even attend the 2009 Draft? We know they were there because they made 12 picks overall, but without a pick in the first two rounds it's hard to say if they found any legit talent. The only noteable offensive player is QB Stephen McGee who will likely sit for a few years and watch Tony Romo age. He is talented and he displays a fiery competitiveness that we have yet to see from Romo. Their overall draft performance puts even greater pressure on the decision to give up so much for Roy E. Williams. The Cowboys are still loaded with fantasy talent but wether they decide to put it all together is yet to be seen.
![]() |
Atlanta Falcons |
The Falcons decided to focus on improving their Defense in the '09 Draft. The addition of TE Tony Gonzalez prior to the draft solidified an already legit offensive squad. His addition has QB Matt Ryan's value steadily rising, WR Roddy White's value taking a small hit, and the RB's Mike Turner and Jerious Norwood not seeing a change.
![]() |
New Orleans Saints |
The Saints were looking to add RB depth to their high octane offense, which was a bit of a head scratcher to anyone that has seen Pierre Thomas play. They waited until after the draft and signed an interesting power running UDFA prospect P.J. Hill to compete for a spot in their backfield. Hill is intriguing but unless he proves he's something special, Bush and Thomas will remain a dominant RB tandem. Expect similar fantasy production out of NO in 2009.
![]() |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers |
As a former coach at K-State, Head Coach Raheem Morris was as familiar with QB Josh Freeman as any team in the NFL. He proved his liking toward the physical specimen by grabbing him in the 1st round. Freeman has a lot of upside and should realistically sit for a season or two before being thrown on to the field, however without any long term answer currently in TB, it's not unlikely to see him take the field by mid season. A fantasy wasteland in TB could make his development quite tough.
![]() |
Carolina Panthers |
A confusing draft for the Panthers. Without a 1st round pick, they decided to restructure QB Jake Delhomme's contract to make room in their cap. They drafted RB depth with RB Mike Goodson, perhaps preparing for a departure of Deangelo Williams, whose rookie contract expires after the 2010 season. Top rated FB Tony Fiammetta has no fantasy relevance. They also did not attempt to find a QB to groom which is surprising after Delhomme's playoff performance in 2008, instead signing UDFA Hunter Cantwell, more of a project. We expect similar fantasy productivity out of Carolina in 2009.
![]() |
Detroit Lions |
We really like the Lions draft from a fantasy perspective. #1 overall selection Matthew Stafford provides a legit franchise QB to build a team around, however he will likely sit for at least half a season behind Daunte Culpepper. The addition of top rated TE Brandon Pettigrew serves as a safety value/protection for Stafford. He can put up Top 15 fantasy numbers at the TE position. 3rd round pick WR Derrick Williams is an explosive player that can return kicks and potentially step in as a #2 WR in a season or two with additional value with double coverage being consistently drawn to Calvin Johnson's side of the field. RB Aaron Brown is an interesting sleeper to backup to Kevin Smith with no legit competition to speak of outside of Maurice Morris. Expect improved fantasy production from all offensive skill positions in 2009.
![]() |
Chicago Bears |
The addition of Jay Cutler prior to the draft was about as big of an offseason move a team could ask for. While we do not see any immediate offensive improvements from the Bears selections in '09, WR Juaquin Iglesias is a nice developmental project that has tremendous upside. 5th round selection WR Johnny Knox is a blazer that can strech the field, but at only 185 lbs may have trouble off press coverage. Jay Culter's immediate fantasy value has officially taken a hit.
![]() |
Minnesota Vikings |
Percy Harvin. Enough said. Not only is he the biggest playmaker in this class, his presence will open up opportunity for every other offensive player on the Vikings roster. The Vikings are going to be a dangerous team, now all they have to do is get Harvin to behave and watch out. It's also important to note that with the addition of 6-8, 337 lb Phil Loadholt makes the Vikings the largest bookend tackle tandem in the NFL. A beastly sign for AP owners.
![]() |
Green Bay Packers |
Other than drafting a FB (which is boring) in the 5th round, the Packers concentrated their entire draft into upgrading the Defense as they move to a 3-4. This will result in more opportunity for Aaron Rogers and Greg Jennings to build thier rapport. The Packers are obviously comfortable with their backfield, so Ryan Grant owners should remain optimistic he is still at least a 1,200 yard RB for 2009.
![]() |
San Francisco 49ers |
An interesting landing spot for WR Michael Crabtree, where 49er fans are excited to have their first legit WR since Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens left town. Crabtree's presence pushes 2nd year WR Josh Morgan into the WR2 position, but this could be a dangerous WR duo in time. We expect Shaun Hill to win the QB job in 2009, and his value improves with the presence of a solid receiving corps. The 49ers also took RB Glen Coffee near the top of the third round and UDFA RB Kory Sheets who will compete to spell stud RB Frank Gore. A capable committee would allow Gore to utilize his pass catching ability, open field running and most importantly, stay fresh.
![]() |
St. Louis Rams |
Marc Bulger was smiling when the Rams took stud OT Jason Smith with the #2 overall instead of QB Mark Sanchez. Keeping Bulger upright gives him added value in 2009. A 5th round pick of WR Brooks Foster will not provide immediate value outside of special teams, but he is a big body threat the team currently lacks in a receiver. Little known RB Chris Ogbonnaya provides neccessary depth behind Steven Jackson, but currently has little value other than a deep handcuff for Jackson owners.
![]() |
Seattle Seahawks |
Not much fantasy improvements to the Seahawks squad in the 2009 draft. 2nd round selection of OT Max Unger should step in immediately to help keep QB Matt Hasselbeck off his back. The selection of Deon Butler provides no immediately value but adds depth to a weak and aging WR corps in Seattle. We also like rookie QB Mike Teel from Rutgers who is an interesting developmental prospect.
![]() |
Arizona Cardinals |
The Cardinals couldn't believe Chris "Beanie" Wells fell to them at the #31 Overall. He should step in immediately to add a needed power running / big play component in the desert. His proven experience at University of Phoenix Stadium should have fantasy owners ecstatic. RB LaRod Stephens-Howling, a Darren Sproles type running back, but should have a hard time competing with Wells and Tim Hightower for touches, but adds an element in the backfield that currently doesn't exist. A beastly RB corp. adds immense value the Cardinals already stacked offense.

Garrard doesn't need to worry about being resigned in 2010. "4/7/2008: Signed a six-year, $60 million contract extension through 2014."
Ray Rice will produce much more than last season for the Ravens. Any word on how Demetrius Williams is doing there?
Not much fantasy improvements for the Seahawks? How about an a healthy Nate Burleson, Deion Branch, Ben Obomanu, and lest we forget TJ Houshmazode.
Thanks for the writeups.
