2010 Trade Deadline: Dynasty Buy / Sell
Whether you are a contender or a rebuilding team in a Dynasty league, you always need to keep next season in mind. Yes, Jonathan Stewart is underwhelming thus far and probably won't re-enter your starting lineup for the rest of the season. But at 23 years old and on the verge of becoming a major Beast, can you afford to give him up for a piece that might help you in 2010? That is a question you have to weigh as the Trade Deadline approaches. In this article, we are going to take a look at some Dynasty Buys that you should look to acquire at a discounted rate and some Dynasty Sells that you should look to unload immediately for optimum value. Your position in league standings will affect what you are able to buy and sell, but don't forget about the future while you make a run at a 2010 championship.

Dynasty Sell

Brandon Lloyd is a candidate for bounceback player of the year.  If asked who you think would lead the league in receiving yards through Week 10, it's almost guaranteed Brandon Lloyd would not be anyone’s choice, except of course, maybe Brandon Lloyd himself. Rostered on 4 teams the last 5 seasons it seems Lloyd has found his place in Denver catching TD’s from Kyle Ortons neck beard.  A non existent rushing attack in Denver has led to a big time aerial assault in Denver and WR1 numbers have followed with Lloyd posting Top-5 fantasy numbers. Although Brandon Lloyd is having a breakout season, he is a sell high player mainly because he has limited Dynasty value. He will be 30 next year, and Denver has a plethora of young WR’s (Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker) in place to step in an contribute in their sophomore campaign. Eddie Royal and Jabar Gaffney are also younger players capable of contributing on a weekly basis and will clearly have increased roles in McDaniels system moving forward.  LLoyd has little Dynasty value because of his age, however for the remainder of 2010, he can put a contending team over the edge and therefore can provide a rebuilding team significantly more long term value in a trade than merely keeping him rostered.  A 2011 season similar to 2010 is unlikely.  If you are interested in learning more about the passing game in Denver and the guy making Brandon Lloyd a fantasy star, check out Kyle Orton's neck Beard in a recent Beast vs. Bust article.

Darren McFadden
is finally breaking out in his 3rd season.  He is currently producing at an extremely high level, but for how long will RunDMC shine as a feature back in the NFL.  Despite 2 games already missed in 2010, McFadden is a Top-5 fantasy RB and leads all Backs with 108.1 yards per game.  Add 24 receptions to his season total and were staring in the face of a Fantasy Beast.  Ok, so we know he is playing as a clear RB1, we know he is one of the few feature backs in the league, and lastly, we know that he has shown a propensity for injury.  McFadden owners have some serious decision making regarding how to handle DMC and the upcoming trade deadline.  For teams with decent RB depth, the high end RB1 value largely outweighs the risk associated with McFadden missing another token 2 games to close out the 2010 Fantasy Football season.  For a contending team an acquisition of McFadden could put your team over the top as he will face porous run defenses in Jacksonville and Indy in playoff weeks 14 and 16 respectively.  He is a high risk/high reward player.  For additional detail regarding the value of Darren McFadden,
check out our latest Beast vs. Bust article, which compares the Dynasty value of McFadden vs. Shady McCoy.

Perennial underperformer Dwayne Bowe is posting some big time fantasy numbers the last few weeks.   He is currently tied with Hakeem Nicks with 9 TD catches, however Bowe has done most of his damage in only 6 games. His 8 TD's in the last 6 games will have any owner on his radar. He is the clear go to WR for Cassel in Kansas City in only his 4th year in the league. The 26 year old has good Dynasty value given his age and his big play ability - despite his historical lackluster effort. Bowe is a sell high cadidate because of his recent big time production and an offensive scheme in KC that is geared toward the run.  His inflated value can be attributed to the fact 5 of his 9 TD have come against the league’s worst pass defenses (Houston, Buffalo, Jacksonville) Although he has a favorable schedule the rest of the season, Bowe should be sold only for high value as he does have legit ability and a nose for the end zone.  He won't catch a lot of ball however so him upside is limited and could fluctuate greatly from season to season.  Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones continue to tear apart defenses on the ground and Bowe manages to reap some benefit, a trend that will continue.  Bowe is currently posting WR1 numbers, but his long term value is that of a WR2.  Move him for legitimate upside players and let the new owner become frustrated with the inconsistency.

Michael Turner owners have been on a wild ride over the past three years. One Beastly season, one injury prone season, and now he is in the midst of a solid but not spectacular year. Turner’s time as a productive back is coming to an end as he approaches 30 years old. The shelf life for a running back in the NFL is very short and Turner's clock is ticking. Turner has had some good games this season but the carries he has accumulated over the past three years along with mounting injuries makes him an ideal sell candidate. He can absolutely help a contender down the stretch as an RB2 and that is the position to take when marketing him. Build for the future by getting rid of him for a younger, up and coming player or a handful of prospects. Turner is 28 and it won’t be long until the Falcons are looking in another direction at the running back slot. They have been working in Jason Snelling more in the past few games and while he is not the answer in Atlanta, he is a solid handcuff. Turner's value is likely as high as it will ever be again. Remember, it is better to sell a running back a year too early as opposed to a year too late.

Carson Palmer is surrounded by weapons this season including two veteran receivers, a solid rookie slot prospect and an explosive rookie tight end. This season it just hasn’t translated to a lot of fantasy value for Palmer owners. His best games this season have come mostly because of garbage time. Palmer has also committed 16 turnovers this season and they add up quickly. Palmer is a strong sell candidate. He is no longer an automatic start every week and he is not going to be a guy you want in your line up next season. Now would be the perfect time to move him and get the most value for him. Selling points could be that he is still a top 10 fantasy QB (even though it is clear he is not playing like a top 10 QB its just there always behind and he racks up the scrub yardage). If you own Palmer the best move might be to see what you can get for him and move on. Palmer fantasy ship has sailed owners should look elsewhere at their QB slot.

Dynasty Buy

With truly elite talent, the opportunities are few and far between where a player of such value can be acquired for a "bargain."  Now is one of those times.  The leagues most talented wide reciever, Larry Fitzgerald, is worth taking a shot on acquiring as the 2010 trade deadline approaches.  The man who once watched himself on the video board score a TD in Super Bowl 43 has been situated within our Top-3 of Dynasty WR's as he records 95+ catch, 1,000+ yard and double digit seasons year after year.  The 27 year old flourished when Kurt Warner was under center in Arizona, but the QB carousel between Derek Anderson and Max Hall has put a speed bump in the way of another Top-3 WR fantasy performance.  As the QB situation continues to work itself out in the desert, Fitz can be had.  He won't be bought at a massive discount, but this is a player that is entering his prime - hard to imagine there is still upside there, but there is.  Fitzgerald's value will continue to climb through this season progresses as the cream rises to the top - a fundamental fantasy football rule.  Acquire him now before it is too late.

In his 3 year NFL career, Sidney Rice has put together one big time statistical season.  The rest of his time has been largely spent roaming the sidelines with serious injuries, including knee and hip issues.  The beauty here is that we know what Rice's upside consists of, however because of his time spent injured, he is now a victim of "out of sight-out of mind."  This man helped many owners win their leagues last year, and made everyone believe he was a sure top 10 pick in all drafts this year. He has great upside with a 6 ft 4 frame 200lb. He was Brett Favre’s go to guy last year and made plays that made him look like one of the NFL’s most clutch receivers. His 1,312 yards and 8 TD’s made him a pro bowler at the age of 24, having Dynasty owners foaming at the mouth hoping he could improve on his stats this season. News in preseason of a hip injury sidelined Rice for the first 10 weeks, and it is up in the air if he will suit up this week, even if he does expect him to slowly get things going in the offense. He is a buy low candidate because of his situation obviously being hurt, but being that Favre has claimed this is his last season (We will see about that) and owners do not want to see Tarvaris Jackson throwing to Rice every week. Rice is a free agent this offseason and could want a big contract somewhere else, so even he does not contribute a lot this season he is a good buy low option for the future.

Quick, name one running back that has scored 21 TD's in his first two seasons, all while playing with consistent injury, but has just 2 this year? Jonathan Stewart...one of BeastOrBust's favorite RB's is currently a buy low candidate every fantasy owner should be acquiring about. Stewart has, quite simply, been awful this year after being one of the most coveted properties in Dynasty leagues. In addition to those 2 TD's, J-Stew has not put up more than 43 rushing yards in any game this season. Clearly, part of the problem is the Panthers overall ineptitude on offense, but you can use that to your advantage. Any owner sitting on Stewart that is in contention is an ideal target because they were expecting at least Flex production out of him this season. Dynasty squads looking to put their team over the top may have an easier time moving Stewart at this very moment, knowing that despite his big time playmaking ability, he provides no immediate value toward to immediate goal.  Rebuilding teams can sit on him for the rest of the season as the Panthers work to sort out their widespread issues.  Either way, his value wills surely rebound in 2011 as he will beocme a prominent feature of the Panthers offense and Williams will likely find himself in another uniform.  J. Stew can currently be bought for a fraction of his Dynasty value.

If anyone has struggled to live up to preseason hype it is 2nd year RB Shonn Greene...but it's hard to fault him for it. As a rookie last year he managed 540 yards and scored 2 TD's. He blew up in the playoffs as he surpassed Thomas Jones by scorching defenses each week.  Greene racked up 135 yards and a TD the first game vs. the Bengals, and 128 yards and a TD vs. the Chargers. Even in the loss to the Colts in the AFC Championship Greene managed 95 yards on 16 carries, so you can imagine that fantasy owners minds were racing when Thomas Jones was cut. What they didn't count on was a resurgence by Ladanian Tomlinson that would push Greene back into his all familar RB2 role. LT has been more than advertised for the Jets, he has been the premier back earlier this season. As expected though with LT’s age, he has been slowing down in production and last week Greene finally led the team in rushing with 20 carries and 72 yards.  Now is your chance to buy him because any owner that has held onto him this long, probably is hungry to get him back in the lineup or move him for someone who can go in their lineup. He is 25 years old and could be a Michael Turner type of back in 2011. Just as long as you don't give up too much for him, he could pay dividends for you down the road.

Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez highlighted the 2009 NFL QB class, each being picked inside the top five and flashing a glimpse of their upside as rookies. 12 picks later the Bucs selected strong armed Kansas State QB Josh Freeman, a BeastOrBust favorite. When it’s all said and done, Freeman could easily be the guy that produces the most fantasy value over his career. The Bucs are off to a 6-3 start and it’s in large part because of the play from their young Beast. Raheem Morris has clearly found his field general, and now the organization is going to build around him in a big way. The building process is off to a great start with the two rookies receivers they drafted in Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn. Both players look like they have the goods to be forces in this league and should be fantasy factors for years to come. They also have added a power RB in LeGarrette Blount, who will help them move the chains and chew up yardage. Freeman’s numbers haven’t been monstrous this season, which is where the opportunity to buy him comes in. In a 1 QB league, he is likely the 2nd or even 3rd QB for a contender, meaning you can offer up a player at another position that might help them secure a championship. Freeman will be a great acquisition to any Dynasty team, he is young, talented and his numbers will increase as his career moves forward.
