Early Season Reactions: Week 4
We are already a quarter of the way through the fantasy season and that means we are getting into the meat of the fantasy schedule...and bye weeks. Your depth will be tested in the coming weeks, with both injuries and byes. All that and the landscape of fantasy value is changing with each and every game. Let's take a look at some thoughts from Week 4's games. Aaron Rodgers is a Beast. He's on pace for the best season of his career and it's very likely that we haven't even seen his ceiling yet.
Mike Vick put up a career high 416 yards passing, along with 2 TD's and 75 yards rushing. He still makes you nervous with every play because of the injury risk, but he is a no doubt about it QB1.
The Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson connection is the new Brady to Moss. The TD record for receivers might fall this year.
Cam Newton continues to turn in elite level performances. Not only is he a threat through the air because of his rocket arm, he might be the most dangerous running QB outside of Mike Vick. He already has 4 rushing TD's on the season. Still, expect some ups and downs, but he's looking better than any rookie QB in recent memory.
Blaine Gabbert is not ready for prime time. Lucky for him, the Jaguars don't really ever play in prime time. Still, he doesn't have many weapons to work with and has struggled so far this season. He'll take his lumps though, and should be a better QB for it in 2012 and beyond. A WR1 has to be at the top of the Jags offseason list.
Chad Henne might be out for the season with a shoulder injury. That is not going to do him any favors in establishing himself as a franchise QB. More details to come on his status.
Beanie Wells rewarded all those owners that he burned in Week 3 by being a surprise inactive. He's now had at least 1 TD in each game he's played this season. Wells has RB2 upside and the way he's running right now, he might just lead the NFL in rushing TD's. If he can stay healthy of course.
The Jets offense was terrible on Sunday night, prompting Rex Ryan to proclaim that "ground and pound" was back. It's a solid plan and would probably actually improve the passing game. Problem is not the strategy, it's the personnel. Shonn Greene has not lived up to the hype bestowed upon him two seasons ago and LT is a useful third down back but nothing more. Expect them to attempt to run more but if they get behind big to New England on Sunday, Mark Sanchez and the passing game is going to have to step up.
Frank Gore was questionable all week and turned in his best performance of the year Sunday, going over 100 yards rushing and scoring a TD. He'll remain a borderline RB1 this season and possibly even next, but Kendall Hunter could very well be the future in San Fran. He didn't put up the stat line that Gore did Sunday, but he's a great Dynasty prospect to stash away.
Percy Harvin is averaging 11.8 yards per carry on 12 carries so far this year. He's averaging 10.1 yards on 17 catches. Dual threat that makes for a nice buy low right now in Dynasty leagues.
Andre Johnson went down like a ton of bricks Sunday, striking fear in the hearts of fantasy owners everywhere. Good news is it was a hamstring and it looks like he'll miss about 3 weeks. Perennial tease Jacoby Jones will fill in and while him might have a decent game or two, he makes for a great sell high in Dynasty leagues. Kevin Walter remains a low upside option, but he could be useful for a few weeks.
Darrius Heyward-Bey had a career high 115 yards on 4 catches Sunday. Sell high!
Curtis Painter is not the heir to the throne, but we already knew that. He does however, love taking shots with Pierre Garcon downfield. That is good news for Pierre, as he might be able to squeeze out WR4 value this season. He's still drop prone and often frustrated Peyton Manning with mental errors, but as long as Painter throws his way often, he'll be startable in deep leagues. Long term, he's likely a WR3.
Jimmy Graham continues to be the apple of Drew Brees' eye. WIth 10 catches for 132 yards this Sunday, Graham has established himself as a must start TE.
With Kenny Britt out for the season, TE Jared Cook stepped up. He only caught two passes, but it was for 93 yards and a touchdown.
