Jay Cutler Fantasy Profile
|
|
Height: 6-3 Weight: 233 Age: 26 |
It wasn't a matter of if Jay Cutler was going to be a fantasy stud, it was just a matter of when. After 4 standout years as a Vanderbilt Commodore and a very impressive Combine, Cutler was drafted by the Denver Broncos 11th overall in 2006. He played in five games that year, but it was enough to convince the Broncos brass to hand him the keys to the offense in 2007. He responded with a very solid first full season, completing 63.6% of his passes for almost 3,500 yards, 20 TD's and 14 INT's. In 2008, he took a big step towards beast territory with over 4,500 yards, 25 TD's and 18 INT"s. Then came offseason drama. Long time Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was fired and replaced by Josh McDaniels. McDaniels tried to deal for Matt Cassel , which would have shipped Cutler to Tampa Bay. This did not sit too well with Cutler and he eventually forced a trade to the Bears, a team lacking a legit franchise QB for at least 20 years.
2010 Season:
Cutler's fantasy value took a hit going from bountiful weapons in Denver, to inexperienced ones in Chicago. Cutler still managed 27 TD's and over 3,600 yards, but with 26 INT's in 2009. This sums up the problem with Jay Cutler - he has the arm and the skills to be a franchise QB, but sometimes his decision-making and supreme over-confidence in his abilities get the best of him. New offensive coordinator Mike Martz will attempt to wrangle the gunslinger, taking advantage of Cutler's big arm. One thing to look out for is the hits that he will take, as a Martz-led offense requires a QB to hold the ball in the pocket while the routes develop downfield. This marriage may be short lived, but should be a successful one for Cutler's fantasy stats. Expect close to 4,000 yards, 25-30 TD's and 15-20 INT's. He is a strong bounceback candidate.
Dynasty Outlook:
Jay Cutler is still very much a franchise QB in Dynasty leagues. The interceptions will always be there and will keep him from being truly elite, but he has the arm to once again be a Top 5 QB. He will need Matt Forte to improve as a rusher, along with the continued development of his wideouts. While none of the options will be long term WR1's, Devin Aromashoudu and Johnny Knox has significant upside. Devin Hester and Earl Bennett should be solid complimentary players as well, but both have a limited upside at this point. Regular seasons of 3,700 - 4,000 yards, 25 - 30 TD's and at least 15 INT's can be expected from Cutler for the foreseeable future.
