Jonathan Stewart Fantasy Profile
|
|
Height: 5-10 Weight: 235 Age: 22 |
Jonathan Stewart was a horse for the Oregon Ducks after a stellar high school career in Washington state. He battled nagging injuries throughout his collegiate career but always produced. Not only did he dominate on the ground, but he also returned kicks and was among the nation's leaders in all-purpose yardage as a junior. He is built like a mack truck and has above average speed for his size. The Carolina Panthers drafted him 13th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. He went on to run for 833 yards and 10 TD's in his rookie season in just 183 carries. He followed that up with a very solid sophomore campaign, rattling off 1,133 yards and 10 TD's on the ground, along with 18 catches for 139 yards and a receiving TD. He improved his yards per carry from 4.5 to 5.1 per game. When Deangelo Williams missed Weeks 15, 16 and 17, the fantasy world got a glimpse of what J-Stew can do when he is not sharing carries. He ran through a very good Vikings defense for 106 yards and 2 combined TD's and followed that up by ripping the Giants for 206 yards and a TD. He capped off the season with a third consecutive 100 yard performance, with 125 and a TD against the Saints. Stewart battled injuries for a second consecutive season, regularly missing Wednesday practices, but he has not missed a game in two years. He underwent surgery in January to alleviate pain in his achilles.
2010 Season:
J-Stew will enter 2010 in another timeshare with Deangelo Williams. Dynasty owners are clamoring for Stewart to have the full time gig all to himself but the Panthers are not likely to move Williams unless they get The split this year could be closer to 50/50 as we see the Panthers groom Stewart for the feature back role in 2011. Both backs will be productive, and both have proven that they do not need a huge number of touches to be productive. For the upcoming season, Stewart has more goal line potential, giving him a slight edge in value. Expect around 1,000 yards and double digit touchdowns once again, solid RB2 value with upside.
Dynasty Outlook:
Carolina is sitting on two franchise running backs. Deangelo Williams is a free agent after the 2010 season, and there is the off chance he could be traded before then. From an NFL standpoint, there is no reason why the Panthers should not franchise him for the 2011 season and keep their two back system in tact. Stewart's immediate success is tied closely to what the team does with Williams, but long term fantasy success is imminent. On the bright side, his current workload is being limited and could pay dividends as he enters his prime. When the team hands the keys to Stewart, he will be a true RB1. Stat lines of 1,400 rushing yards, 25-30 catches, 250 yards and 12+ TD's can be expected.
