Kellen Winslow Fantasy Profile
|
|
Height: 6-4 Weight: 240 Age: 26 |
Kellen Winslow is a self proclaimed "soldier". Prior to being drafted #6 overall, by the Cleveland Browns in 2004, major question marks surrounded Winslows attitude following a vicious post game outburst describing his allegiance to his school (University of Miami) and his willingness to "kill" his opponents on the football field. In 2004 the Browns drafted a highly productive pass catching TE with the attributes of a very large WR. Fantasy Gold. To date Winslow's career has been characterized by on-field injury, a torn an ACL in a motorcycle accident in 2005, and two highly productive (80+ reception) seasons. While Winslow has been a productive player for the Browns, the 2009 offeseason arrival of Head Coach Eric Mangini and subsequent personnnel changes prompted a trade of Winslow to the Tampa Bay Bucanneers. With little receiving options in Tampa Bay, Winslow has found himself in a great situation to be a top receiving option.
2010 Season:
2009 was another solid, if unspectacular season for Winslow. Durability remains a concern, however and clouds his long term value. Winslow immediately stepped in as the teams top receiving target and had a solid rapport with potential franchise QB Josh Freeman. 2010 will be a learning experience for Freeman, which could make Winslow very inconsistent from week to week. Freeman does possess a very strong arm and should find Winslow frequently. Look for around 80 catches, 900 yards and 5 - 6 TD's.
Dynasty Outlook:
Winslow's talent is undeniable. His Dynasty Outlook is limited at this point to a low-end TE1, but he is more suited as a high quality back-up. If you own him as your TE1, start to think about developing a youner player. If you are attempting to acquire him, play up the longevity angle and try to knock his perceived value down a peg or two. Winslow has settled in as a productive player in the NFL and should have 2 - 3 more seasons similar to his career averages. Long term, though, his injury history could catch up with him.

2010 NFL Rookie Tight End Profiles
The NFL Tight End is evolving. As teams spread the ball out, a TE who can serve as a legitimate receiving option is very important. Most of the highest rated prospects will fall in the 6'5 - 250 lb range with superior athleticism. Traditional blocking ability is less of a barometer for a players future success (especially in the fantasy world), however it can be a decent indicator of how quickly they can make the transition and thus see game action. Like the WR position, there is usually a year or two before TE's can be productive. The 2010 Draft class has three prospects capable of developing into Top 5 options and a handful more that could be starters in deep fantasy leagues. When all is said and done, this could be a very productive fantasy TE class.

2009 Rookie Tight End Profiles
The Tight End is not a glorious position in fantasy football. Elite pass catching TE's are rare, and the rest of the group provide relatively the same average value. The college spread offense is producing more and more pass catching TE's who are unpolished run blockers. Unless these pass catchers are a special talent, they have trouble finding the field. Find the player that blends above average pass catching ability and adequate run support and you have found fantasy value.
