Kyle Orton Fantasy Profile

Height: 6-4   Weight: 225   Age: 27
Born: 11/14/1982 Altoona , IA
College: Purdue
Experience: 5th season
High School: Southeast Polk HS [Runnels, IA]

Major question marks have surrounded Kyle Orton through his professional career.  Highly recruited out of high school, Orton went on to have a very successful college career, quarterbacking the Purdue Boilermakers to four consecutive bowl games between 2001 and 2004.  Drafted by the Bears in 2005, he started 15 games filling in for injured QB Rex Grossman.  Following time on the bench and an injury riddled 2006 and '07, he was thrust back into the starting role again in 2008 where he passed for 2,972 yards, for 18 TD's and 12 INT's in 15 starts.  Much hype surrounded him after his hot start in '08 until an ankle injury derailed his progress.  Traded to the Broncos as part of the "Cutler Trade," Orton looks to use him mistake free passing style to carve out a long term role in the Denver Master Plan.  He is considered a cerebral QB that can thrive is a system where multiple WR reads is required.  What he doesn't have is a monster arm, but his ability to make smart decisions will keep him moderately productive in the right offensive system.

2010 Season:

Kyle Orton had an under the radar type season in 2009.  He passed for 3,800 yards, 21 TD's and only 12 INT's.  Like always, Orton will not get the respect that he earned as the leagues first player to fall outside  the 2009 - 4,000 yard club - a group that included 10 QB's.  Once again, questions regarding Orton's ablity to be a long term franchise QB solutions will be questioned in the offseason.  Further uncertainty surrounding the status of Brandon Marshall's future in Denver also exists.  The bright side here is that Orton has shown an ability to serve as a high end QB2 and in certain situations occassionally post a big game.  Orton owners will have to sweat out another offseason wondering if a change will be made in the Denver QB position.  Should Orton retain the starting job in Denver in 2010 - we expect that he will - he could post career numbers in his second season in McDaniels season, even without Brandon Marshall.  Orton's ability to spread the ball around gives him a unique skill to perform despite his weapons, as evidenced in his performance with the Bears in 2008.  As always however, his upside is limited to high end QB2 / low end QB1 numbers.

Dynasty Outlook:

Should Orton establish himself as a franchise QB this year in Denver he has a Dynasty Upside of around 3,800 - 4,000 yards and 25 TD's for at least the next few years.  Another thing to consider is that McDaniels clearly loves grooming young QB's and Denver's reluctance to sign him to a long term deal questions his future in the Mile High City.  Orton is still considered young, but watch closely if Denver continues to take QB's in the draft or acquire perennial journeymen in Free Agency.  Orton's outlook is obviously too volatile to build a Dynasty roster around, but he serves as a viable second option in 1 QB leagues with a bump to weekly starter in 2 QB leagues.  Be sure to have a contingency plan in place however.

2010 Rookie Quarterback Player Profiles
There are upwards of 10 NFL teams seeking out their future franchise QB. Many Dynasty league owners are doing the same. If you own an older Beast like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, you can afford to draft a youngster and sit him for a few seasons as he learns the ropes. The instant returns of Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford and to some extent Mark Sanchez has owners anxious for a young Dynasty cornerstone to call their own. This draft class, though quickly dismissed as pedestrian, is not without its long term potential. The patience of Dynasty owners is going to be tested because most of these QB's are not ready for NFL game action in 2010.

Week 1: In or Out
No one needs to tell you to start Larry Fitzgerald or Aaron Rodgers every week. It's a rule you learn as you play fantasy football, you don't bench your beasts. Doesn't matter what the matchup is, you play them. Sure, you'll get burnt occassionally, but the true beasts are going to lead you to the promise land more often than not.  But you might be tettering on a 2nd QB or a flex player or between two RB's for one spot. Each week, we'll take a look at some of the players that you might be thinking about starting or sitting in deeper leagues.
