Nature of the Beast: Week 10 Review
Be sure to check back later this week for our BeastOrBust.com Radio Show where we will be providing some insight into Trade Deadline strategy in a Dynasty Format.Quarterbacks
Aaron Rodgers is still getting sacked a lot. While the hits obviously take a toll on a QB's healthy, most also tend to forget the impact it has on a players psyche (See David Carr). While Rodgers remains one of our favorite Dynasty QB's, he is not going to help your team if he cannot make it through a season. His longevity over the duration of a career will also come into question here. He is a stud, so don't panic, but Rodgers owners unfortunately will have something to keep them up at nights this playoff season.
Yes, the Colts remain unbeaten. Yes, Peyton Manning continues to post ridiculous stat lines. So where is the downside to this? Historically the Colts will rest Manning late in the game Week 15 and sometimes sit him entirely for Week 16. Not good news for fantasy owners competing for a championship. Manning owners should either hope for a couple of Colts losses or the new regime in Indy feel that playing for an undefeated season is worth playing Manning even though homefield advantage has been clinched.
Kyle Orton was en-route to posting some solid numbers this weekend before he was sidelined by an ankle injury. As some owners may remember, Ortons downhill slide occured last year following a great start and subsequent ankle injury. The entire fantasy value of all Broncos take a hit should Chris Simms see any significant PT.
Matt Stafford gets hit on nearly every pass play.
Vince Young is showing some poise. The Titans are on a 3 game win streak since he became the starter.
Running Backs
Injuries were a big part of the Week 10 headlines. Michael Turner was beasting along with over 100 yards on 9 carries until exiting with a high ankle sprain. Jason Snelling filled in for him and was respectable. Expect him and a healthy Jerious Norwood to split work if the Burner misses any time. Ronnie Brown also departed with an ankle injury and was seen leaving the stadium on crutches. No word on his status yet, but look for a lot of Ricky Williams in the coming weeks. Bengals workhorse Cedric Benson also left with a hip flexor. He looks like he is on track to play in Week 11, but rookie playmaker Bernard Scott is worth monitoring. Dynasty owners should definitely have him rostered already based on his potential. Cincinnati also may put aside their strict policy against signing troubled players to sign Larry Johnson. Coach Marvin Lewis did say that LJ would be inactive on game days if he inks. Former all everything back Brian Westbrook got concussed for the second time this month and may be out for the rest of the season. Dynasty owners already know about LeSean McCoy, but his value is on the rise even more with Westy's latest injury. Last and certainly least, Julius Jones got a broken rib causing him to miss most of Sunday's game versus the Cardinals. It was later reported that he also had bleeding in his lungs. Justin Forsett stepped up in a big way, with 17 carries for 123 yards and a TD, along with 5 catches for another 26 yards. He is only 5'8" and 194 lbs., but the 2nd year RB out of Cal has a perfect opportunity to show the organization that he deserves to be in their future plans. Check out last month's Dynasty Digging article for more information on Forsett and why we like his Dynasty situation.
Not only is Chris Johnson every coaches dream, he is every dynasty owners dream. He already has over 1,000 rushing yards this season, including four straight 125+ yard efforts. Oh, and he chipped in 9 catches for 100 yards through the air on Sunday against the Bills. He has pushed aside Lendale White and he pretty much is the Titans entire offense. If he keeps up this pace, Johnson could challenge for the number 1 fantasy spot next season. His status as a Top 3 Dynasty RB has been cemented as well.
Maurice Jones-Drew did apologize to his fantasy owners for kneeling at the 1 yard line in the final seconds of the Jaguars / Jets tilt. Considering that he usually puts his owners in a position to win week in and week out, we would not recommend trading him unless this became an every week problem.
Ladainian Tomlinson owners have not had much to cheer about this season. It was nice to see the 24 carry, 96 yard, 2 TD effort on Sunday against a stout Eagles defense, but make no mistake - the sun is setting on a Hall of Fame career. Now may be your last chance to move him in your Dynasty league for anything resembling value. Take advantage.
Wide Receivers
Randy Moss is still nasty. The Colts defensive backfield isn't the most impressive in the league, but still, he's got some juice left in the tank. Brandon Marshall is very concerned about Kyle Orton's injury. The Broncos didn't score a point with Chris Simms under center. Sidney Rice is emerging as a low end WR1. Don't pick up Jason Avant off the waiver wire this week. He is an unbeliveable slot/posession receiver on a team loaded with offensive weaponry - no consistent value here. Pierre Garcon found the end zone this weekend for the first time since Week 3. His 11 targets are a good sign Peyton still has trust in him. Robert Meachem should be used more in the Saints offense. He is better than Lance Moore and Devery Henderson. Keep an eye on Brandon Gibson. In his first NFL start he had 7 receptions for 93 yards. He is a nice compliment lining up opposite the skill set of Donnie Avery.
Tight Ends
He only had 4 catches for 50 yards on Sunday, but Fred Davis is showing that he belongs in the NFL. If you have the room, he also belongs on your Dynasty roster. Yes, Chris Cooley may come back from injury in the coming weeks, but Davis has long term potential worth paying attention to. Right now, he is no more than a TE3, but keep an eye on his progress and how the Redskins work him into the game plan after Cooley is back in the lineup.
Mark Sanchez may be in a tailspin, but at least he is looking for Dustin Keller more. The 2nd year future stud turned in his second straight solid outing, with 6 catches for 58 yards on Sunday after an 8 catch, 76 yard, 1 TD line against the Dolphins in Week 8. Keller has had a down year, but he remains a Top 10 Dynasty option at the position. More consistent play from Sanchize will only help Keller's game. The Jets have the makings of a nice passing attack in future seasons. If you can acquire Keller on the cheap, pull the trigger and enjoy the future earnings.
James Casey will get a chance to display his TE skills this weekend with the Texans coming off a bye. Jason Snelling is more proficient pass blocker, where Casey is an athletic freak known for his receiving skills. If he can show he is worth keeping on the field, some nice fantasy numbers could follow.
