Nature of the Beast - Week 4 Review
QuarterbacksDavid Garrard finally had a big game. He is a matchup play and an excellent QB2.
Eli Manning is super efficient and does not seem to miss Plaxico Burress one bit. Monitor his injury closely, but it looks like if Eli tolerates the pain, he will play.
Kyle Orton is still toeing the line between effective low-end QB1 and backup material. Right now, though, he his effective and should get better.
Trent Edwards - It seems as though the preseason changes of Offensive Coordinators is catching up to the Bills. Next weeks matchup against the Browns will decide whether this offense is a lost cause for 2009.
The Redskins are not a very good football team. Is it the play calling? That is part of it. Jason Campbell struggled Sunday, but still threw two touchdowns. We maintain that he is a talented palyer, but his situation is not helping him out right now. He will be on a new team next season.
Jay Cutler has changed the Bears into passing team very quickly. It's a tough call which WR will reap the benefits each week, but he will continue to post big QB numbers for you.
Two games in a row without a passing TD for Drew Brees. Step off the ledge, he will be fine.
Matt Hasselbeck is looking to practice this week, but it remains to be seen when he will return to the lineup. Seneca Wallace is a very viable backup, hold onto him even if and when Hass returns.
Josh Johnson was not great in his first career start this weekend, but he was decent. That is expected because he is a raw product, but he should get at least a few more starts. The Bucs likely want Josh Freeman to see the field at some point this season (maybe as early as Week 6).
Peyton Manning is really, really good.
Brett Favre still has a very strong arm.
Derek Anderson earned himself another start, but the Browns are bad.
Tom Brady is still shaking off the rust.
Chad Henne did not turn the ball over in his first NFL start. Another win or two for the Fins and you can expect to start seeing Henne going deep 4 or 5 times a game. It will compliment the power run game Miami will utilize the rest of the season.
Running Backs
There was the guy the Steelers drafted in the first round last year. Rashard Mendenhall ran with power and had a breakout performance. This should be the beginning of the end for Willie Parker. Expect Mendy to still have his ups and downs, but he is a high upside flex player.
Jerome Harrison had an excellent performance in place of the injured Jamal Lewis. With rookie James Davis out for the season, expect Harrison to have consistent value moving forward. He has always had solid burst and breakaway speed, but he impressed us by handling the full workload Sunday.
Brandon Jacobs has not found the endzone with the frequency that he did last season. Expect that to change soon. On a positive note, Jacobs has averaged over 20 touches per game so far this year.
Darren McFadden had one of his worst performances as a pro this Sunday. To make matters worse, Run DMC is out 2 to 4 weeks with a torn meniscus. Justin Fargas led the team in carries on Sunday with 10, but he will split work with Mike Bush. With a tough schedule coming up, neither is a great play, but Bush clearly has more upside.
Steven Jackson is on a really, really bad team. He has not found the endzone yet this season, but he has continued to churn out solid yardage. Expect this trend to continue unless the Rams can muster up anything through the air.
Kevin Smith was a game time decision on Sunday, and ended up getting 19 carries for just 30 yards. Good news was he was healthy enough to play, he scored 2 TDs and he continues to be involved in the passing game (4 catches, 21 yards). As one of the few remaining fantasy bell cows, he is an every week must start.
Ricky Williams has been a solid compliment to Ronnie Brown in Miami. Both backs should see an increase in touches as the Dolphins go with the inexperienced Chad Henne at QB this season.
Joseph Addai has yet to get much going on an offensive juggernaut. Has anyone's value dropped more over the past two seasons than Addai? Expect to see more of rookie Donald Brown as the season wears on. He is the more talented back here.
Pierre Thomas is really good.
The return of Marshawn Lynch was a bit anticlimactic for the Bills. Was if Beast Mode or the Bills offense. Fred Jackson had a poor game as well.
Tashard Choice ran well enough against a tough Broncos D to remain a viable flex starter in Felix Jones absence. MBIII got the goal line carry however.
Wide Receivers
Steve Smith (the good one) is a Beast! He has become Eli Mannings most reliable target and is currently on pace for about 130 receptions and 16 Touchdowns in 2009. While these numbers wont likely remain consistent, Smith is putting up WR#1 numbers. For those of you re-draft players, Smith has become undoubtedly the top value of 2009 fantasy drafts. Check back soon for a Beast vs. Bust feature article on Steve Smith and Steve Smith.
Mike Sims-Walker is a legit talent. He is here to stay and adds a dimension to the Jags offense they haven't had and desperately need to keep winning. He has had a injury prone label, but we really like this guy and hope he can stay healthy so we can evaluate him on a full 16 game resume.
Calvin Johnson is not scoring Touchdowns. He did however break out in Week 4. Matt Stafford is starting to look great, expect Johnsons numbers to continue to improve.
Keep an eye on Mohammed Massaquoi. Talent is legit and he has excellent makeup.
Brandon Marshall has finally realized he has an integral role in the Broncos offense. Look for his production to steadily increase.
Johnny Knox has the potential to be an elite talent in the league. Look for his production to steadily increase.
The Colts offense is running on all cylinders. Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are obviously must starts. Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie can be started weekly if needed. Anthony Gonzalez may have a tough time finding a role in this offense when he returns from injury.
Santana Moss can only be counted on in favorable matchups.
Tom Brady to Randy Moss is not what is used to be.
Roy E. Williams again showed us he in not a #1 WR. Tony Romo is not helping his cause either.
Hakeem Nicks showed his big play ability in his first game back from injury. Nicks is a solid emerging WR.
Mario Manningham is still having trouble catching the football.
Chad Ochocinco is not a feared WR anymore. His two scores were nice, but his 3 receptions for 24 yards were not.
The Raiders have good WR talent on their team. The Raiders offense (and Russell in particular) has rendered them irrelevent.
Josh Morgan found the end zone in Week 4. Still a pretty boring performance. The 49ers are not passing the ball.
Kenny Britt is really good. He is the best WR on the Titans roster. Count on a few more 100 yard games from his this year.
Mike Wallace is pretty good. Pay attention to his development, and if you have space for him in deep leagues, grab him before it is too late.
What happend to Braylon Edwards?
Dwayne Bowe was a game time decision. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, they should have held him out.
Tight Ends
A quiet Week 4 for Tight Ends.
Jason Witten is much better than his 2009 season is suggesting. Tony Romo is hurting his value. Or is it the lack of T.O.?
Marcedes Lewis is quietly posting some decent games. He is nothing special, but he seems to be developing into a reliable target for David Garrard.
Dallas Clark is looking as good as ever.
Vernon Davis is the top receiving option on the 49ers. He has bought into the Mike Singletary message.
1 reception for 1 yard and 1 TD is not the type of production Greg Olsen owners care for. Culter is spreading the ball around plenty and Olsen's value is suffering.
Visanthe Shiancoe finally found the end zone this week. Expect his role to grow.
Jeremichael Finley is a ridiculous talent. He may not be consistent enough to count on a weekly basis...yet. Hopefully you own him in your Dynasty League by now.
