Steve Slaton Fantasy Profile

Height: 5-9   Weight: 215   Age: 24
Born: 1/4/1986 Levittown , PA
College: West Virginia
Experience: 2nd season
High School: Conwell-Egan HS [Fairless Hills, PA]

Steve Slaton was well on his way to being a 1st round pick in the NFL Draft following his sophomore season at West Virginia University. The Mountaineer racked up over 1,700 yards on the ground, another 360 through the air and totaled 18 TD’s in 2006 after a stellar freshman performance. Maybe he set the bar too high, because his junior season was seen as a disappointment as he tallied just over 1,000 yards rushing, 350 receiving and 19 total TD’s. That bumped his draft stock into a 2nd or 3rd round grade. This didn't bother the Houston Texans as they were more than happy to take him 89th overall in the 3rd round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The knock on Slaton was that he is under-sized to be an every down back, but his rookie season put some of those concerns to rest. Slaton impressed everyone with 1,282 rushing yards, 9 rushing TD’s, 50 receptions for 377 yards and a TD. Where does he go from there?  His Sophomore campain was somewhat of a different story.

2010 Season:

Slaton had a major regression in 2009.  Fumbling issues and an ability to run in between the tackles has dropped his reality and fantasy stock.  His carry totals and all purpose yardage production dropped by over 50%.  Nervous about his ability to carry the load, the Texans will likely look to add an every-down back to the Houston backfield moving forward. Despite a diminished stat line, Slaton did improve as a pass catcher in 2009 and managed to post 4 receiving TD's, a number that saved his season totals from major disappointment.  While the Texans will add another RB to the mix, it is a safe bet that Slaton's above average receiving ability will keep him as a focal point in 3rd down situations.  Look for 500 yards rushing, 50 receptions, 700 yards receiving and 10 total TD’s in 2010.

Dynasty Outlook:

Slaton’s size is going to be a question mark throughout his career. While his ceiling has been reached, his opportunity to be a productive RBBC will not change. The Texans will eventually add a pile pusher to keep Slaton fresh and utilize his versatility, however his fantasy value remains unchanged as a role player in the league. We are confident Slaton has the ability to touch the rock 200 times a year, and as a skilled pass catcher, he has the ability to produce on a pass happy Texans squad.  There is going to be some doubt in dynasty owners mind about him eventually to be a dominant member of an NFL backfield. Monitor his touches over the next few years, because he will likely become a sell candidate after 3 or 4 more seasons of a heavy workload.  For the time being, move him if you are getting great value, however his rookie season production cannot be ignored and he has sneaky value moving forward as a gadget player.  Look for seasons of 1,500 all purpose yards and 8-12  TD’s to be the standard for Slaton.

2010 NFL Rookie Running Back Profiles
The running back is a former cornerstone to any championship Dynasty football team. In the current version of the NFL, though, each team seemingly needs at least 2, if not 3 productive RB's on their roster. Gone are the days of every NFL team feeding one RB the ball 25 times a game every game. RB's are now asked to be productive while only touching the ball 10-15 times a game. The 2010 Draft Class is not filled with many RB's that will blow you away with their franchise player ability. Instead, though, you'll find numerous prospects that could very well be fantasy factors as part of commitees and time shares. Let's take a look at some of the top Dynasty prospects at the RB position.
