Week 1 Fantasy Recap
QuarterbacksIt is not often we see Peyton Manning playing from a huge deficit. A huge fantasy performance followed and the loss actually gives fantasy owners hope that maybe he will be playing for something in Week 16 rather than resting during championship week. No INT's in 57 pass attempts is crazy.
Tom Brady is in for a monster year, despite the Randy Moss drama. Moss would certainly help the cause however.
Kevin Kolb did not look good prior to his early game exit due to a concussion. The issues here are the Eagles offensive line and Mike Vick's ability to run hid the fact that the Eagles O-Line is quite poor, although even Vick looked like a beaten dog by the end of the game. Kolb is still the starter, but monitor his health as he could miss a couple weeks (and nice fantasy matchups) in the coming weeks. Whoever had Week 1 in the Philly QB controversy pool, congratulations.
Eli Manning has a legit group of receivers. Even Mario Manningham was in the mix. His INT stat line wasn't entirely his fault with dropped and tipped passes. The WR group will improve as the season progresses. He is in line for a big year and this passing offense is on the verge of elite status.
Brett Favre looks old. Clearly he was rusty, looking out of sync for most of the game. He is going to miss his favorite target Sidney Rice although he clearly still likes to throw to Visante Shiancoe. His chemistry with Percy Harvin will improve as the season progresses. This is a situation to monitor closely, but you would expect him to get more comfortable if he remains upright.
Sam Bradford is legit folks. 55 pass attempts in his first career start is crazy. While the Rams shouldn't neccessarily be putting him in that type of situation, fantasy owners should be very excited for this Emerging Dynasty Prospect.
Matt Schaub owners hate Arian Foster. A heavy does of ground game was the gameplan against a poor run defense in Indy. Don't expect this tactic every week out of one of the leagues top passing attacks. Shaubs numbers will return to normal, but more running is in the weekly recipe in Houston.
Aaron Rodgers - An unexpected slow start in a game which was supposed to become a shootout. He started the same way in 2009. No need to be concerned. Weapons galore.
Carson Palmer didn't look great despite his monster stat line. He got behind early which supported a huge passing effort. He has weapons, but it is still difficult to trust him for the long haul. Might be a sell high candidate with another solid performance.
Derek Anderson didn't do anything particularly well, but also didn't turn the ball over. However, this is not a good situation in Arizona (on many levels) as the Cards only beat a
rookie QB forced to throw 55 times by a margin of 4 points.
The shoulder injury to Matt Stafford is a bummer. We love his talent, but an injury to a throwing arm is not good. This evolving offensive unit comes to a screeching halt if he misses significant time.
Running Backs
Arian Foster is a legit talent and has the ideal skill set to run in Houston. Emerging in a big way.
Chris Johnson is the real deal. Not that this is groundbreaking news, but he is just so legit it's ridiculous. He could be atop our Dynasty Rankings by Week 3.
Adrian Peterson is a full grown monster. I feel like i'm going to get injured when I watch him run. Injury concern is a legitimate worry for Peterson owners, because if Favre cannot get anything going, he could approach 400 touches easily.
Rashard Mendenhall looked very explosive on his walk off 50+ yard run. He salvaged a relatively average rushing day with that run which came in overtime. The more the Steelers see of that explosiveness to ever make a concerted effort to have a more hard nosed/balanced rushing attack.
Jerome Harrison got fewer carries than Peyton Hillis. Keep in mind the Browns drafted Hardesty for a reason. The good news for Harrison is that Hillis put the ball on the ground twice. Harrison will get another shot.
Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs need each other for either to be effective.
The only way any member of the highly talented Cowboys Backfield will have any fantasy value is is one of the three of them gets injured. Seriously, this is a situation to avoid until there are only two runners available to tote the rock in the Dallas.
LeSean McCoy ran the ball well. Better than expected and his situation is one to watch closely early in the season.
Ryan Grant injured his ankle. It will be interesting to see how he recovers from injury as he has always remained a healthy player. Brandon Jackson has never overwhelmed, but has a nice opportunity in the coming weeks. Too bad promising rookie James Starks is not healthy, because he could have been a nice pick-up.
Maurice Jones-Drew does not have an injured knee. The preseason hype train is a powerful and influencial entity.
Steven Jackson reportedly has an inflamed knee Monday morning. This is concerning.
Ricky Williams had 18 carries to Ronnie Brown's 13. Williams has similar value to 2009.
CJ Spiller and Jahvid Best both were unimpressive. Best scored decent fantasy points, but a closer look at his stat line indicates a "rookie type" performance. Expect inconsistencies from both of these players this year. Welcome to the regular season.
Darren McFadden was heavily involved in both the rushing and passing game. We still don't trust him, but he's definitley worth the add if can swing it.
Wide Receivers
The window of opportunity to grab Hakeem Nicks at a reasonable price in your Dynasty league just closed. A lot of preseason hype does not always translate to fantasy value, but in the case of Nicks, it just might be justified. He had only 4 catches and 75 yards on Sunday, but 3 of the passes went for touchdowns. If week 1 is a sign of things to come, Nicks could potentially be a top 10 receiver and strong candidate for breakout fantasy player of the year. He is still developing as a player, but could reach Beast status by midseason.
Although it was a fairly unproductive week, there were many positive signs from Cowboys WR Dez Bryant. In an offensively sloppy game Bryant was targeted 12 times and came down with 8 catches. It was clear that the Cowboys are expecting to make Dez a big part of their offense this year.
It is tough to be a solid fantasy receiver without scoring touchdowns, but Wes Welker was the exception over the past couple over years. He was a monster when it came to catches and yards, especially in PPR leagues. In Week 1 Welker scored 2 td's, which was half of his total from last season. He looks healthy and if he is going to be scoring td's this year, his numbers could be crazy.
Andre Johnson owners hate Arian Foster. Yikes. Ditto for training camp darling Jacoby Jones.
15 targets for Larry Fitzgerald. 3 Receptions. Yikes. At least Fitz owners can take solice in the fact that he scored a TD.
In other Cardinals news, Steve Breaston flew under the radar for most of the offseason due to QB issues and the potential emergence of Early Doucet, but he could be a very solid option this year.
DeSean Jackson had an off game, but step away from the ledge. The explosive, big play threat is bound to have his share of inconsistent performances this season, but he will get his numbers.
Anthony Gonzalez has an uphill battle for value this year, but do not drop him just yet. He is an injury away from more targets, but of course he was the one that got injured on Sunday. 2nd year Austin Collie once again capitalized on the opportunity, catching 10 balls for 131 yards and a late TD. He is going to have inconsistent games throughout the year because of all of the mouths to feed in Indy, but he is a developing talent whose ceiling might be higher than most think.
Percy Harvin and Brett Favre were on a different page Thursday. This will change as the season progresses. We expect Harvin to become old grey beard's receiving option of choice by Week 3.
Marques Colston is the only reliable fantasy WR option on the Saints. Drew Brees spreads the ball around more than any other QB, and that makes Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson and Lance Moore inconsistent options without an injury to one of them.
Tight Ends
Jermaine Gresham is going to be a Beast in the near future. 6 catches for 25 yards is nothing too exciting, but he found the end zone already. Temper expectations, but big things to follow. He may earn his way into a few spot starts this season.
Could Marcedes Lewis become Garrard's go to guy in 2010? 2 targets, 2 receptions, 2 TD's. Lets not get overly excited here.
Dallas Clark is old reliable.
Visante Shiancoe looks as though he is Favre's favorite target in the passing game. While Shanks is a nice receiving option, he is not elite and therefore will likely be shut down if focused on by opposing defenses - like he was in the 2nd half vs. the Saints. Favre needs to find chemistry with Percy Harvin to keep Shanks value at an optimum level.
Jermichael Finley owners feel disappointed in a rather mediocre stat line. Keep in mind the Packers overall stat line was mediocre. Be patient here.
Vernon Davis is still the top receiving option in San Fran. Through Sunday's games he had the second most receptions for TE's.
Kevin Boss - Concussion. The Giants passing attack surprisingly didn't slow down without him in the game.
