Week 14 Review: Still Beasting
There was a special feeling in the air last week as the fantasy playoffs started in many leagues across Fantasy land. For some, that special feeling was the hunt for a championship, for others it was the painful end to another season. As playmaking QB prospect Robert Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday, we are reminded that each offseason creates an opportunity to rebuild and reload. The focus right now, though, is on 2011 and bringing home a title. Every decision will be agonized over and 2nd guessed in the fantasy playoffs, but you have to let your Beasts play and allow the chips to fall where they may. Let's delve into some performances from Week 14 that caught our eye. Rookie Jake Locker stepped in for an injured Matt Hasselbeck and was impressive, nearly leading the Titans a late comeback win against the Saints. He still has some development to do, but as a Dynasty prospect, his upside is of a QB1. If you can acquire him this offseason at a more discounted rate, it could pay off as soon as 2012.
Fellow rookie TJ Yates followed up a solid Week 13 starting debut with a comeback win against the Bengals. He's working without Andre Johnson, but he's shown to be very capable in his limited action. Definite Matt Schaub handcuff and possibly more down the road.
Tony Romo turned in an elite performance again on Sunday, with 4 TD's. With Miles Austin back healthy, Romo has 4 lethal receiving options to choose from. He may make some blunders in-game, but he's playing like the QB1 he is thought to be.
The Jets thoroughly dominated the Chiefs in Week 14, as Mark Sanchez was moving the offense at will. Sanchize has been much maligned this year, but he continues to be a solid QB2 with 2 passing TD's and 2 rushing TD's on Sunday.
No one takes more big hits than Ben Roethlisberger, but that does not seem to deter him from putting up QB1 numbers. He's questionable for Monday Night though with an ankle sprain, so make sure to watch for updates before rolling with him in your league's playoffs.
In his first 3 games of the year, Ryan Fitzpatrick had an 9:3 TD:INT ratio. In his last 10 games, that ratio is 11:14. The Bills have said publicly that they are not planning to draft a QB early, but they'll change their minds come April. Chan Gailey should be salivating to get his hands on Heisman winner Robert Griffin III.
John Skelton filled in for an injured Kevin Kolb Sunday, throwing for 282 yards and 3 TD's. He's still raw, but don't give up on him as a Dynasty prospect. Worth stashing.
Maurice Jones-Drew saw his re-draft stock drop prior to the season because of concerns over his knee injury. He is coming off of a 4 TD performance and does not look any worse for wear. If you own MJD, though, you should look to shop him this offseason. At 27 years old, he still has a few Beastly years left, but you can likely get major value for him right now and won't have to be worrying about when the decline is coming.
Marshawn Lynch continues to tear up opposing defenses and run with the same reckless abandon that he did as a rookie. While Lynch's yards per carry has never been a strong point, he's a versatile back that gets better as the game goes on. His Dynasty future is still cloudy, however, even at just 25 years of age. He should remain a production by volume RB in 2012, but Seattle will most likely ride him into the ground in the coming years while grooming a future feature back.
Roy Helu continues to impress as an all-purpose threat. Dynasty arrow is pointing way up.
The Dolphins were playing from behind, but Reggie Bush still managed to creep over 100 yards rushing for the 3rd time this season and just fourth time in his career. He's a strong FLEX play at the moment and will look to carry that forward into 2012. There is upside here because the Dolphins still don't use him enough in the passing game.
Demaryius Thomas had his second consecutive Beastly performance with 7 catches, 78 yards and a TD Sunday. He let another potential TD go through his hands early in the game. He and Eric Decker could develop into a dangerous tandem, but they are limited by Tim Tebow's throwing accuracy and reliance on the run at the moment.
Jeremy Maclin returned to the lineup on Sunday and caught one ball for 14 yards. He'll need another game or two to work back into form, but makes for an excellent buy low in Dynasty leagues.
Torrey Smith continues to impress, he is one to watch for 2012.
This year Austin Collie has 369 yards receiving and zero TD's. Last year he had 359 yards receiving and 4 TD's in 3 September games. Oh what a difference a Manning makes. Collie looks to be past the scary concussion issues and makes for a low risk trade candidate this offseason, especially with Reggie Wayne potentially walking and Dallas Clark getting up there.
Percy Harvin has had 4 big games in a row, scoring 5 TD's in that span (his only 5 receiving TD's of the year). He only has one 100 yard receiving game this year, but remains a strong option, especially in PPR leagues. Long term, he has borderline WR1 upside because of his dual threat ability, but will likely top out as an explosive WR2.
Rob Gronkowski is unstoppable at the current moment. What he is doing at the tight end position has never been seen before.
With the injury to Greg Jennings, look for Jermichael Finley to step up for the Packers. He has the ability to be in the Gronk/Jimmy Graham class of tight end.
Outside of those TE's, the two players getting it done on a regular basis are on the wrong side of 30. Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez continue to churn out solid fantasy performances and are safe to deploy as TE1's for the rest of the season.
